Sofa Too Big for Your New House? Here's What To Do

It happens more than you'd think. You measure the room, you measure the sofa — and somehow it still doesn't work. Or you've moved from a bigger place to a smaller one and the sofa that looked great in your old living room is completely swamping the new one.

Here's how to deal with it quickly and without losing a fortune.

Why Sofas Don't Fit After a Move

The most common reasons:

The room shape is different. A corner sofa that worked perfectly in an L-shaped room might dominate a square room of exactly the same square footage.

The proportions are wrong. A large corner sofa can make a narrow room feel like a corridor even if there's technically space for it.

The doorway or hallway is too narrow. Some sofas simply can't be manoeuvred through a tight hallway or up a staircase — even if the room itself is fine.

You've moved somewhere smaller. Downsizing, rental moves, separation — life changes mean room sizes change.

Option 1: Sell Your Current Sofa

The fastest way to turn a too-big sofa into cash is Facebook Marketplace or Gumtree. Price it honestly, take good photos, and you'll usually have interest within 24–48 hours for a fairly priced sofa in decent condition.

If you want a rough guide: a standard three-seater in good condition typically sells for £80–£180 privately. A corner sofa in good condition can sell for £150–£350 depending on size, brand and condition.

Option 2: Swap It for Something That Fits

Once you've sold the old sofa — or even before — you need a replacement that actually works in your new space.

This is exactly where a quality preloved sofa makes more sense than a new one. You're in a transition period. You might move again. Buying a new sofa on finance right now is adding financial pressure to an already stressful time.

At Revived Sofas we have a regular turnover of sofas in different sizes — compact two-seaters, standard three-seaters, and corner sofas in various configurations. If you need something specific, get in touch and we'll keep an eye out for you.

How to Measure Properly Before You Buy Again

Before you order anything, measure:

- The room width and depth — where will the sofa sit and how much clearance do you need to walk past it?
- The doorway — width and height, and any tight turns in the hallway
- The diagonal — for doorways that seem tight, a sofa can sometimes be tilted diagonally through. Measure the diagonal of the doorframe (corner to corner) and compare to the sofa height

A good rule: if your hallway is under 90cm wide, you need a sofa under 85cm deep. Most standard three-seaters are 85–95cm deep. Corner sofas vary widely so always check the spec.
