You've ordered the Ooni Koda 12. Then it hits you — it runs on gas, and the gas bottle isn't included. Here's exactly what you need, where to get it, and what it actually costs to run.
What's Actually Included
The Koda 12 comes with the gas hose and a 37 mBar regulator — the UK standard for propane. What it doesn't include is the gas bottle itself. That's normal; no pizza oven, BBQ or patio heater ships with one, because compressed gas cylinders can't legally be sent by standard courier or Royal Mail.
What to Buy — And Where
You need a propane bottle (not butane — propane performs better in cooler UK temperatures and is what the regulator is designed for). The most common UK option is Calor Patio Gas or Flogas Patio Gas, sold as an exchange cylinder — you pay a refundable deposit on the bottle itself, then pay for refills going forward.
- Where to buy: larger petrol stations, Go Outdoors, Halfords, garden centres, and many Tesco Extra / Asda superstores with a fuel forecourt
- First purchase cost: roughly £35–£50 (includes the cylinder deposit)
- Refill/exchange cost after that: roughly £25–£30
- Size needed: a 5kg or 6kg Patio Gas cylinder is plenty for the Koda 12 and easily portable
How Much Gas Does It Actually Use?
This is the reassuring part. A single 6kg cylinder typically lasts dozens of pizza-cooking sessions. Cost per use works out at roughly 30–50p of gas per pizza night — genuinely negligible against the price of the oven itself or a single takeaway.
Not Keen on Sourcing Gas Bottles? There's an Alternative
If the idea of finding and swapping gas cylinders puts you off, it's worth considering the Ninja Woodfire instead — it's fully electric, runs on wood pellets for flavour, and needs nothing more than a plug socket. No bottles, no exchanges, no running out mid-cook.
