You knew the risk when you got the dog. You told yourself it would be fine. It was not fine.
Whether it's been chewed, scratched, torn, or just slowly destroyed by eight months of muddy paws and enthusiastic sitting — the sofa is done. And now you need a new one.
Here's the thing: this is actually the best possible time to buy preloved.
Why Buying New After a Dog Is an Expensive Mistake
A brand new fabric sofa and a dog is a combination that will end in one of two ways. Either you spend the next four years anxious about the sofa and constantly telling the dog off, or the dog does its thing and you're back here in eighteen months having this exact conversation again.
Neither outcome is worth £1,100 and a 12-week wait.
The smart approach: buy a quality preloved sofa at a price point that doesn't cause you daily anxiety. Something that looks great, sits well, and that you genuinely don't mind the dog being on — because realistically, the dog is going to be on it.
What Fabric Holds Up Best Against Dogs
If you're replacing a destroyed sofa and you have a dog, fabric choice matters more than anything else this time.
Avoid
Velvet, chenille and loose weaves. Dog claws catch easily and pull threads. These fabrics look beautiful for approximately three weeks with an active dog in the house.
Go For
Tightly woven fabrics — canvas weave, brushed cotton or a tight microfibre. These resist clawing better and are easier to clean. Leather and faux leather are also excellent options — claws don't pull threads and hair wipes off easily.
The Colour Question
Mid-tones are your friend. A medium grey hides dog hair from most breeds. Very light cream shows everything. Very dark charcoal shows light-coloured hair. Match the fabric colour to your dog's coat as closely as you reasonably can.
