Step by Step
1. Plan your layout. Standard panelling height is 900mm–1m, roughly a third to half the wall. Measure your wall and divide into equal panel widths (usually 40–60cm) so it looks intentional, not squeezed in.
2. Mark and cut. Mark stud/batten positions, then cut your vertical and horizontal MDF strips to size with a mitre saw for clean corners.
3. Fix in place. Adhesive first, then panel pins to hold while it cures. Use a spirit level throughout — a slightly off panel throws off the whole wall.
4. Fill, sand, prime. Fill nail holes and joins, sand smooth, then prime before topcoat.
5. Paint. A single tone across panelling and wall is the current trend — it reads as considered rather than a "feature."
