How to Clean a Fabric Sofa Properly (Without Ruining It)

A spilled glass of wine, a muddy paw print, or just months of everyday use — fabric sofas show wear fast if you don't know the right way to deal with it. Here's exactly how to clean one properly, without making it worse.

Check the Label First — Always

Most sofas have a cleaning code tag tucked under a cushion or on the frame: W means water-based cleaners are safe, S means solvent-based only (no water), WS means either, and X means vacuum only — no liquid cleaners at all. Skipping this step is the single most common cause of permanently damaged or watermarked sofas.

Step 1: Vacuum Thoroughly First

Before any liquid touches the fabric, vacuum every surface including crevices, under cushions and along seams. Loose dirt and crumbs left in place become a paste the moment they're wet, making stains genuinely harder to remove rather than easier.

Step 2: Treat Fresh Stains Immediately

Blot — never rub — with a clean, dry cloth to lift as much as possible before it sets. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fibres and can damage the weave. A fabric-safe upholstery cleaner spray, applied lightly and blotted out, deals with the vast majority of everyday marks: food, drink, mud, general grime.

Step 3: Deal With Odours — the Bicarb Trick

For general mustiness, pet smell, or just that lived-in odour that builds up over time, sprinkle bicarbonate of soda generously over the whole sofa, leave for at least an hour (overnight for stubborn smells), then vacuum thoroughly. It draws out and neutralises odours far more effectively than fabric spray alone, and it's genuinely one of the cheapest, most effective upholstery tricks there is.

Step 4: Always Test First

Before treating a visible area, test any cleaner on a hidden patch — underneath a cushion or on the back of the sofa — and wait a few minutes to check for discolouration or texture change. This single habit prevents almost every cleaning disaster.

• Don't oversaturate the fabric — too much liquid can soak into the foam underneath and cause mould or a permanent watermark ring
• Don't use bleach or harsh chemicals on coloured fabric, even diluted
