The Best Time of Year to Buy a Sofa Cheaply — The Savvy Buyer's Calendar

If you can be flexible about when you buy, timing your sofa purchase correctly can save you hundreds. Here's the full savvy buyer's calendar — and the one timing insight that beats all of it.

January — The Single Best Month for Sofa Bargains

January is unambiguously the best time to buy a new sofa from a showroom retailer. Every major furniture retailer — DFS, SCS, Next, Furniture Village, John Lewis — runs genuine clearance sales in January to shift end-of-year stock and hit revenue targets.

Discounts of 20–35% on selected lines are common. Some discontinued ranges go even lower. If you've had your eye on a specific sofa and you can wait until January, this is when to buy it.

The catch: stock is limited and goes quickly. Popular styles in neutral colours sell within days of January sales starting.

Bank Holiday Weekends

DFS and SCS in particular use bank holiday weekends — Easter, May bank holiday, August bank holiday — as sale triggers. These are legitimate sale events where prices genuinely reduce, though rarely as dramatically as January.

If you need to buy between January sales, a bank holiday weekend is your next best opportunity.

Black Friday (Late November)

Furniture retailers have increasingly adopted Black Friday. Discounts are real but often shallower than January — typically 10–20%. The advantage is that Black Friday falls just before Christmas, which means January delivery times — useful if you're furnishing a home for the new year.

End of Financial Year (March)

Less well known but worth timing around: March is the end of the retail financial year for many furniture chains. Sales staff are hitting annual targets. This is a good time to negotiate in store, even if the advertised sale price isn't exceptional.

August Clearance

Summer clearance events in late July and August clear spring/summer ranges ahead of autumn stock arrivals. Quality varies — these are often the leftover lines other buyers didn't want — but genuine bargains appear.

The Timing Insight That Beats All of These

All of the above assumes you're buying new. And all of it is optimising around the edges of a price that's still significantly higher than the preloved alternative.

The savvy buyer's insight: preloved sofas don't have a season. Good stock appears year-round. And the saving — £500–£800 compared to new at any sale price — is larger than any seasonal discount.

You don't need to wait for January. You don't need to watch for bank holiday sales. You just need to check what's available now.

At Revived Sofas we list new stock regularly across Staffordshire and the West Midlands. The best pieces go quickly — not because of artificial sale urgency, but because they're genuinely good value.
