Vacuuming keeps a fabric sofa looking presentable week to week, but a proper deep clean every few months is what actually keeps it fresh and extends its life. Here's the method that gets real results without needing a professional steam cleaner.
Check the cleaning code first
Look for a small tag under a cushion or on the frame, usually marked W, S, WS, or X. W means water-based cleaners are safe. S means solvent-based only, no water. WS means either. X means vacuum only, no liquid at all — this step matters more than any product you use.
Step-by-step deep clean (W or WS fabrics)
- Vacuum everything first — cushions removed, seams, crevices, the frame underneath.
- Test any cleaner on a hidden patch — underside of a cushion, always, every time.
- Use a proper upholstery cleaner or a mild washing-up liquid solution — work it in with a soft brush in small circular motions, section by section, not the whole sofa soaked at once.
- Blot, don't scrub, to remove the solution — a clean, slightly damp cloth, changed often.
- Dry fully before use — open windows, a fan pointed at the sofa, or a dehumidifier in the room. This is the step most people rush and it's the one that causes mould and smell problems.
If the tag says S or X
Use a dry solvent-based upholstery cleaner (S) or stick to thorough vacuuming plus a fabric-safe dry foam product (X) — water-based methods risk watermarks and shrinkage on these fabrics.
How often is a genuine deep clean needed
Every 3–6 months for a normal household, more often with kids, pets, or heavy daily use. Regular vacuuming in between does most of the day-to-day work.
