Still Paying for a Sofa You Don't Even Like Anymore?

Why sofa regret is so common
Showroom conditions are designed to make every sofa feel acceptable. The lighting is warm. The room sets are carefully styled. The sofa is positioned to show its best angle.
What you don't see: how it'll look in your actual living room, under your actual lighting, next to your actual walls. You don't know if the colour works until it's in your home. By then it's too late.
Finance makes it worse because you can't easily exit. You're committed financially and emotionally, and the path of least resistance is just to keep paying and keep living with a sofa that doesn't feel right.
What to do if you're in this situation
Check your finance agreement first. If you've paid more than a third of the total amount, you have rights under the Consumer Credit Act to voluntarily terminate and return the goods — this is called a Section 99 termination. Get advice from Citizens Advice before doing this as there are conditions.
If you own the sofa outright — sell it. A sofa in decent condition sells on Facebook Marketplace within 48 hours if priced fairly. Get rid of it, recoup some money, and start fresh.
What to buy instead
This time, don't commit to something you haven't lived with. A quality preloved sofa at £300–£400 lets you try a style, a size, a colour — in your actual home. If it's not right in a year, sell it for close to what you paid and try something different.
